Hydric Hammocks Zone 9

Mixed evergreen and deciduous forests that contain a diverse array of overstory and understory tree species, but few species of herbs. The absence of fire allows the rich diversity of canopy trees to exist. Hammock is a Native American word for protected area (fires rarely burn into the moist hammock). Dense, lush fern-covered system under mixed hardwoods such as water oak, magnolia, sabal palm, basswood. Can include swamp azalea, yellow anise, needle palm and native viburnums. Moist, moderately acid soils high in organic matter and dissolved lime, usually bordering deeper wetlands and receiving constant moisture from seepage. Plants are tolerant of temporary flooding and some shade. Plants require moderate soil fertility, good moisture supply and no drought or salt exposure. Many maritime hammock species invade this community in warmer areas.
